My Final Reflection

Upon reflecting on what I have done for the past twelve weeks, I realise that ‘communications’ is not what I had actually thought it would be. Communication can be non-verbal cues and written texts, not just conversations; the interaction can be between two or more individuals or between two cells!

And I thought modern technology can facilitate communication. Little do I know it has caused many more problems such as miscommunication (see cartoon below). As such, I have to agree with John Powell when he said:

“Communication works for those who work at it.”

Truthfully, I have never put in much thought and effort when communicating. I now realise that ‘communications’ is just like any other skills which can be acquired and needs to be practised regularly. ES2007S has allowed me to develop linguistically and has emphasised the importance of communications at the workplace.

I have already shared with my committee members what I’ve learnt because I treasure team bonding a lot. And I hope to impart this acquired knowledge to my students too.

I believe I am prepared for the working world with the elevated self-confidence that I now possess. My friends have noticed this change in me too. I realise that I am less emotive when I respond to my friends' actions or words and I analyse possible consequences of my actions before rebutting. Simply, I have learnt to 'respond' and not 'react'. I wouldn’t want to end up like these people (below) would I?

  1. Hello Sarah,

I liked how you manage to make a link between the topics in your blog posts and your major at times, inclusive of this blog post as well. Through that, we can see your point of view of the topic at hand through a different perspective.

The soft skills we have acquired from taking this module often come into play when we are in the workforce or in school. It is great how this module has made you a more analytical person with regards to your responses in a casual conversation. Thinking about the consequences of your actions could go a long way in preventing any possible misunderstandings.

Your passion for teaching is evident and I wish you all the best in your career!

  3. Hi Sarah

Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on the change that everyone has found so positive. Keep it up! I like how you raise questions and put your ideas across without being too critical.

Like you, I used to take communications for granted but this course has taught me so much more. Technology can hardly replace face-to-face communication.

As a Life Sciences major, I always find it a delight in reading your posts that you always attempt to include a few elements of Life Sciences in. I hope that this course has aided you to your fervour for teaching. I am sure your students will benefit a lot from you.

    All the best!

  5. Hello Sarah,

First of all, it was really nice to be in the same group as you for our team research project. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your understanding and patience towards me throughout the course. =)

Your blog opening is unique and interesting!! I like the phrase you quoted from John Powell: “Communication works for those who work at it.” and the cartoon of miscommunication you included. They only work to enhance the overall quality of your post, well-done on that! =)

I agree completely with John Powell(and you) that communication works for those who work at it. Afterall, it is a skill that incorporates many different aspects and can be practised and worked upon till perfection. Only people who value communications will be proficient in it and I definitely hope we belong to this group of people. =)

Finally, all the best of your upcoming exams. Keep in touch! =)

    Regards,
    May Chen, Crystal.

  6. Hi Siti,

I too have the same thought that communication is only limited to verbal interaction initially. This course has made me realize that communication has its many facades (as you have pointed out) and can be used to achieve various goals.

Indeed, this course has taught us the need to look into the things that we take for granted in our everyday life such as simple communication with friends and family members. Useful skills such as resolving conflict will come in handy as it can be applied to a variety of situations.

Doing the survey research project with you has been a pleasant experience. I have gained some knowledge on GM technology from you during the project.

All the best for your 1 more year of study and your future career at NIE.

    Regards
    Chin Min
